11. The Second Coming of Christ:

SC

1. WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PROMISES JESUS EVER MADE?

1SC John 14:1-3 Jesus promised to come again. The apostles talked about it all the time, and the hope of His coming is the most positive teaching in the Bible. The second Advent is mentioned more than 300 times in the New Testament. How do we know He's coming? Because He said so. Why would Jesus go through all the trouble and agony of coming to Earth for 33 years and dying for our sins if He didn't plan to come back and get us? He's coming all right: and that truth is the focal point of our Christian existence.

2. JESUS SAID: IF I GO . . . (THEN) I WILL COME AGAIN. DID JESUS ACTUALLY GO AWAY?

•  Jesus' statement was spoken in the subjunctive mode. The truth of the statement hinges on whether or not the "if" takes place. Should the "if" fail to happen, we can be sure that the "then" part of the statement won't happen either. So, did the "if" of Christ's promise take place?

2SC Acts 1:9-11 Many people saw Him ascend. Even though we have no information as to the number, we know that at least 11 disciples were there--and it could have been as many as 120 (the number of those who, ten days later received the Holy Spirit in the upper room). Another important event happened at this time: Messengers (were they angels?) dressed in white announced that He would return in same way that He left.

So, this is what we can expect when Jesus comes.
        • The same Jesus will come as He went away.
        • He will come in the clouds.
        • Messengers will announce his coming.
        • People will see him come.

3. THE MESSENGERS SAID THAT THE SAME JESUS WOULD RETURN. WHAT WAS JESUS LIKE WHEN HE WENT AWAY?

3SC Luke 24:36-43, 50, 51 Jesus was a real flesh and bone person. Soon after He ate the fish, Jesus ascended into Heaven. The same real flesh and bone Jesus will come again.

4. WHO WILL HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF SEEING JESUS COME BACK AGAIN?

4SC Rev. 1:7 Every eye will see Him. No one who is alive at that time will need to ask, "what did you see?," for everyone will see Him coming in the clouds.

5. HOW BRIGHT WILL HIS COMING BE?

5SC Matt. 24:27 Even when a thunderstorm is dozens of miles away, we can still see the lightning on the horizon. Christ's coming will be just as visible. It's not something that can be hidden.

•  Jesus' coming will not be secret. He will not come unseen and snatch His people away. Everything Jesus did when He was on Earth He did publicly, before the eyes of whomever stood in that place at that time. We cannot expect that Jesus will sneak in the back door without anyone knowing of His arrival. And don't expect to hear about it in some late breaking news feature. When Jesus comes, everybody will see Him coming.

6. WHO WILL COME WITH JESUS, AND WHY?

6SC Matt. 24:30, 31 Jesus will bring all His angels with Him. Their work is to gather together His people from all over the world. (four winds=four points of the compass)

7. HOW WILL THE WICKED FARE AT THE SECOND COMING?

7SC 2 Thess. 1:7-9 Just as an X-ray technician cannot continue to remain healthy when he stands in its rays without the protection of his shield, just so, sinners cannot stand before the brightness of Jesus unless He Himself is their shield against the brilliance of His coming.

•  We will study about the punishment of the wicked later in the series, but let it be said at this point that Paul did not say the wicked would be punished for eternity. It's the destruction that lasts forever.

8. WHAT WILL ACTUALLY DESTROY THE WICKED?

8SC 2 Thess. 2:8 The wicked will be destroyed by the brightness of His coming.

9. WHAT ELSE WILL HAPPEN WHEN JESUS COMES?

9SC 1 Thess. 4:16, 17 Some call this the noisiest text in the Bible. Notice what will take place:
        •  There will be a shout
        •  The archangel's voice will be heard
        •  The trumpet of God will sound
        •
Millions of graves will be ripped open as the righteous dead are raised to life.

And the whishing sound as countless glorified people being carried up by angels to meet Jesus in the air.

(Other Bible texts speak of an earthquake that breaks down the cities; mountains falling, basketball size hail stones falling.)

No one will miss it!

10. HOW WILL THE COMING OF JESUS AFFECT THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR HIM?

10SC 1 Cor. 15:51-57

     •  Many, who believe in Jesus as their Savior, will still be alive when He comes.
     •  They will be changed and given bodies that will not die or decay
     •  Believers who have died will come out of their graves with bodies that have already been changed.

11. WHAT WILL OUR BODIES BE LIKE AFTER JESUS CHANGES THEM?

11SC Phil. 3:20, 21 Some believe that in Heaven, the saints will not have real bodies, but will be spirit creatures that will sit around on clouds, playing inaudible music on intangible harps for all eternity. But Paul says that, even though our bodies will be changed, they will be like Christ's glorious body. But note that we will have real flesh and bones like Jesus had when He went away. (cf. Luke 24:36-43).

12. HOW WILL THE RIGHTEOUS FEEL WHEN THEY SEE JESUS COMING IN THE CLOUDS?

12SC Isa. 25:9 Those who have been looking forward to Jesus advent will rejoice when they see Jesus coming. The wicked people have already received their god in Satan, who "disguises himself as an angel of light." (2 Cor. 11:14, NRSV) But those who love Jesus have waited for Him to come, for they know He will save them.

Don't you want to be ready when Jesus comes?
Ask Him to become your Savior today, and every day of your life
—and you will be ready.
