1. THROUGH WHAT RITUAL DOES JESUS SAY THAT EACH OF US MUST PASS IF WE DESIRE TO BE SAVED?
1B Mark 16:16 All those who believe that Jesus died for their sins will want to be baptized. This step is necessary for salvation.
2. HOW WAS JESUS BAPTIZED?
2B Mark 1:9-11 Jesus was baptized by immersion (being completely put under the water) in the river Jordan. This river is not a clean river, because it has a silty bottom, and it's banks are muddy. The Syrian general Naaman, who had leprosy, didn't want to get into the water of the Jordan, because it was so muddy. But Jesus allowed John to lower Him beneath the surface of this dirty river.
3. WHY WAS JESUS BAPTIZED?
3B Dan. 9:24; Matt. 3:15-17 Jesus' baptism was for Him an anointing service, an act through which He began His ministry. And it was at His baptism that the Father and the Holy Spirit announced that Jesus of Nazareth was the Son of God, the Messiah Who had come to save the world from sin.
4. WHAT DOES HIS BAPTISM HAVE TO DO WITH US?
4B 1 Pet. 2:21 Since Jesus was baptized, even though He was perfect and had no need to pass through this rite, we who are filled with sin should be willing to follow His example.
5. HOW SHOULD A PERSON BE BAPTIZED?
5B Acts 8:36-39 Philip took the eunuch down into the water and immersed him.
The word "Baptism" comes from the Greek word baptizo which means "to immerse." The word has never been used to describe pouring, sprinkling, dipping, or any other action besides the total submersion of the individual under the water. Throughout the past 2500 years, while many words have changed their meanings, baptizo has always remained the same. Greek women today still baptizo their clothes.
6. OF WHAT IS THE RITE OF BAPTISM A SYMBOL?
6B Col. 2:12 Baptism is a symbol of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. As we are lowered into the water, we must, for a few seconds, stop breathing. In this we act out the death of Christ for our sin. The water that covers us is a symbol of the tomb into which Jesus body was placed. And when we rise from the water and take another breath of air, we pass through the symbol of Jesus' resurrection.
7. HOW DO WE GET READY FOR BAPTISM?
7B Matt. 28:19, 20 Preparation for baptism includes believing and observing all that Jesus ordained in the Bible. Many feel that all we need to do in order to be ready for baptism is to believe that Jesus has saved us from our sins, and that's absolutely necessary. But Jesus said we are to "make disciples" of His children before we baptize them. Part of this discipleship includes teaching the truths of God's word, just like He did with His own disciples.
8. IS IT EVER APPROPRIATE TO BE BAPTIZED A SECOND TIME?
8B Acts 19:1-5 Judging from the experience of these men, it appears that when a person learns a significant new Bible truth, or experiences real growth in their relationship to Christ, this would justify being baptized a second time.
9. WHAT SHOULD WE DO BEFORE WE ARE BAPTIZED?
9B 1 Cor 15:57 Before baptism we must all ask Christ to give us victory over all our former the sinful practices. If we do not, Satan will use them as a wedge to get into our lives again in order to discourage us and destroy our walk with Jesus.
10. HOW DOES BAPTISM AFFECT OUR CHRISTIAN LIVES?
10B Gal. 3:25-27 When we are baptized into Christ's body, the church, we will have put on Christ. Our lives will be headed in a new direction. Our friends will notice that we have changed, and often, the change will draw them to Christ as well. Everything will be new and different, because when we are baptized, we become new people.
11. WHO WILL BE OUR EXAMPLE FROM THIS TIME FORTH?
11B 1 John 2:6 We must follow Jesus' example. The only way to do this is to spend time with Him in Bible study and prayer every day. Jesus is our guide, but the Bible is our road map, and prayer is our briefing session. We cannot follow Jesus' example and live a victorious life unless we spend time in Bible study and prayer each and every day.
12. WHAT SHOULD BE UPPERMOST IN OUR MINDS NOW THAT WE HAVE TAKEN THIS MOST IMPORTANT STEP?
12B Col 3:1-4 We should set our affections on heavenly things. We will still live in this world and need to care for the needs of ourselves and our families, but our utmost desire will be to live with Christ in His kingdom. Everything we do, and say and think will be done for the purpose of being like Jesus.
13. HOW CAN I BE PREPARED TO KEEP FROM SINNING FROM NOW ON?
13B James 4:7, 8 When we are tempted to sin, we should first submit ourselves to God, and then resist the devil. When we do this Satan will flee from us. We cannot resist the devil on our own, but when we submit ourselves to God, then He will fight our battles for us and give us victory over sin.
14. INTO WHAT EXPERIENCE DOES BAPTISM INTRODUCE US?
14B Acts 2:37, 38, 47 When we are baptized, we become members of the body of Christ—the church.
15. WHAT WILL BE THE END RESULT OF THIS COMPLETE SURRENDER?
15B Rev. 22:14 Those who keep God's commandments (NIV "wash their robes") will inherit the Holy City.
