My Master Walked Beside Me*

My Master walked beside me
   along life's mountain road,
He asked if He could guide my feet
   and bear my heavy load.
"Faint not, my weary one," He said,
   "the way is rough and long;
Though human strength will not endure,
   My grace can make you strong.”

I slipped my feeble hand in His
   and felt the nail prints there;
He told me that His sacrifice
   could save me from despair.
I knelt before the Master
   and thanked Him for His love;
For coming to this world of woe
   from His pure home above.

I begged Him to forgive me
   for the way I'd grieved Him so;
I knew that it was my sin
   that had brought Him here below;
The Savior bent and touched by life
   and made my spirit soar;
"Dear one, I don't condemn you,
   now go and sin no more.”

My Master walks beside me
   along life's mountain road;
He guides my feet along the way
   and bears my heavy load;
Now as we walk the narrow road
   with His hand holding mine;
I have no fear, no care, no want—
   I have His love divine.
