The Third commandment

The 3rd commandment says:
Exodus 20:7 (KJV)Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
      Another translation:
Exodus 20:7 (NIV) "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
This is explained to a certain extent in the Psalms.
Psa 111:9 (NIV) He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever‑‑ holy and awesome is his name.
"The Hebrews, like other ancient Near Eastern peoples, attached great significance to personal names. Their names had a literal meaning sometimes symbolic of the character and personality of the one it designated, . . .
"This . . . is why the third commandment directs us to revere God's name. His name symbolizes His infinitely holy character (Ex. 34.5‑7), so when we misuse His name, we depreciate His character. Using the Lord's name carelessly or as an exclamation demonstrates a lack of love and respect for Him, as well as a lack of trust in Him." Sabbath School Lesson Quarterly October 17, 2000.
God is the Creator. He made the stars and the tiny atoms. He is the source of all life and love and happiness. None of these things would exist without Yahweh, God of Heaven and Earth.
Since He is awesome, almighty, all knowing; we should hallow His Name. When we use His Name in a worthy manner, we bring glory to Him. When we use His Name in a careless way we do Him dishonor.
